The mission of the California Main Street Alliance (CAMSA) is to serve as the primary non-profit advocate for the principles and ideals of California Main Street, a program that strives to enhance the economic, social, cultural, and environmental well being of California’s historic and traditional downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts.
CAMSA will offer education and other assistance on behalf of the State of California’s California Main Streets program, California Main Street communities, and all communities aspiring to practice and sustain the Main Street Approach to commercial revitalization. |
Join CAMSA
In 1985, California joined a growing national movement to improve the quality of life in America’s towns, cities, and neighborhoods by restoring the economic health of Main Streets — historic, traditionally designed business districts that have long served as the heart of their surrounding communities. The California legislature created the California Main Streets Program in the California Technology, Trade and Commerce Agency to serve as a networking and information resource for local Main Street programs throughout the state. There are currently 39 State-Certified California Main Street districts, with many more hoping to join the network.
In 2002, the network of California Main Street communities recognized the need for a nonprofit organization to supplement the work of the state program by raising funds and conducting broad-based education about the Main Street Approach to commercial revitalization. To this end, the communities formed the California Main Street Alliance.
With the closure of the California Technology Trade & Commerce Agency in 2003, and the subsequent loss of funding for the California Main Street Program, CAMSA has stepped in to keep the program in operation while we advocate for renewed funding for a state-level program.
CAMSA is a membership organization. Membership is open to all state-certified California Main Street communities, as well as any other persons or organizations that support CAMSA’s goals (applications for membership from individuals or organizations that are not Certified Main Street communities are subject to Board approval).
The annual membership fee is $250. Members are eligible to vote at membership meetings and to serve on the Board. They also receive access to inside information on policy issues affecting downtown revitalization and priority for attendance at Main Street network meetings and other events.
